First Batts

I brought home a Duncan drum carder. What a fabulously engineered machine.
These are the first batts I ran through it.

On the right is the dyed roving I purchased. The center is a first pass through the drum carder, and on the left is the 2nd pass.

You can't really see how streaked the color variations are in the middle batt, but they are far more blended in the left one. It's a lovely turquoise now from what was a green and blue dyed roving.

  1. Maureen,
Did you just return from BSG? And did you purchase a Duncan drum carder there!!!!!!! :-) Is it motorized, or hand driven, how wide is it? I looked at them last year, had prepared to purchase, and then he wasn't back at his booth the next morning early, and I chickened out. I have a Patrick Green, but it is small and tedious with the amount of fiber I wish to work on.

I am envious! :-) You lucky girl.

  2. Yes, I got the Duncan at BSJ. It is 8" hand crank with brush. They have a much wider motorized version for production spinning, but this is a big jump over the 72tpi I have. It is a dream to spin batts.

BSJ was my very first fiber event since a Handweavers Conference back in the late '70's.
